Description:

Discipline is the set of rules or norms whose consitent compliance lead to a certain result.

If we talk in tennis terms a desciplined player is the one that is able to respect the tactical “rules” to have an organized and structured game.

To understand the Tactical rules check our course “Tactical parameters in tennis Coaching”

Goal of the activity

Be disciplined in making correct decisions. For examlple between the transitions from defense to attack.

To be able to make a good decision first you have to know the rule: don’t attack being 3 metters behind the line in a forced position, attack when being close to the baseline.

Being disciplined in my trainnings will mean that everytime I recognize that I’m 3 metters behind the line I have to follow the rule and I can not attack.

Organization and development:

Making activities, exercises or competitions where they prioritize being disciplined in decision making, we will promote tactical organitzation in the game and obtain good results. It is important that the coach explain the “tactical rules” and is consistent with them.

Practical examples

Working on discipline in decision-making “When to attack”:

The players hit Backhands Cross-court; they are learning to perceive the different ball heights and trajectories (deeper and shorter balls) and get used to making the correct decision (when defending and attacking)”.

Method:Hitting Drills.

Contents: Generating power with the ground strokes in order to push the opponent back and get a shorter ball to be able to move forward (in a diagonal) and generate power to hit a Winner shot.

Exercise: Hitting Backhand Vs Backhand cross-court in Absorption or Containment and whenever one of the players steps forward (whether to hit a Backhand or Forehand Inside-out/in) there are 4 options/decisions to execute the Attack:

1-Short Cross-court ‘angle’ opening the court wide.

2-Off-the-court Cross-court heavy.

3-Down-the-line heavy.

4-Down-the-line Drop Shot.

5 – Forehand Inside-Out Off-the-court heavy.

Working discipline in decision-making “When to use the forehand”:

Same as above with forehand inside out outward.

Working discipline in decision-making “When to Drop shots”:

Same as above from forehand to crossed forehand and when a player sees the opportunity and makes the decision, make a drop shot and the point is finished.

Variants; after the drop shot, free points until completion.

Practical cases

If a player wants his game statistic to be optimal between unforced errors and winners, he must develop an orderly game respecting the areas of play in attack and defense, making the correct decisions in each of the different options.

Variants can be carried out in all proposals

Variants: All that the coach can think of using the different practice methods.
