Progression week 1 to 4: Dominate the Baseline Game

Content includes:

  • Objectives to accomplish. 1  goal a week.
  • Challenges to accomplish by players 1 a week.
  • Proposed sesion plan to be worked (5 per week)

Content (goals and session plans)

Week 1: Consistent baseline game taking time away

Goals:

Technical concept:

  • Adjust to opponent ball to find contacts between hip and shoulder as the ball is going up.
  • Review Open stands, close stands and absortions
  • Adjust the termination of the hand depending on the direction of the run.
    • Near the shoulder when moving diagonaly forward
    • Near to the ear when moving side ways
    • Over the head when moving diagonaly back

 

Tactical 

  • Recover position close the baseline making a diference between
    • Attacking recovery position (inside the court)
    • Neutral recovery position (1 or 1.5 meters from the baseline)
    • Defending recovery position (1.5 and 2 meters from the baseline)

Challenge your players!

At the end of the week 1 propose to play a tie break where all the balls have to be contacted between hip and shoulder and on the rise.

If the players doesn’t follow this two rules, the coach takes the point away.

Week 2: Consistent baseline game taking time away

Goals:

Continue working on the concepts worked in week 1

At the end of the week 2 propose to play a set where all the balls have to be contacted between hip and shoulder and on the rise.

If the players doesn’t follow this two rules, the coach takes the point away.

Week 3: Setting up plays to finish points inside the court

Goals:

Technical

Review concepts worked week 1 and 2

Decision making

Recognize between defensive and ofensive position.

  • Defend cross court or to the middle with height over the net to have time to recover
  • Whan having the initiative, set up the point moving the opponent following the plays mentioned on the practice sessions.

Tactical Concepts (plays)

  1. Long topspin shot and short topspin attack.
  2. Long topspin crosscourt shot and flat down-the-line attack.
  3. Short topspin shot and long topspin attack.
  4. Long topspin inside out forehand and short topspin attack shot.
  5. Short topspin with inside out forehand and long topspin attack shot.

Challenge your players!

At the end of the week 3 propose to play a set where the player has done at least 1 of the proposed plays in each game.

Week 4: Setting up plays to finish points inside the court (slice)

Goals:

Tactical concept (plays)

Review plays worked week 3 & practice following plays

  • Play set-ups using long sliced shots and topspin attack shots into the short crosscourt opening
  • Play set-ups using long topspin and short sliced attack shots.

Challenge your players!

At the end of the week 4 propose to play a set where the player has done at least 2 of the proposed plays in each game.

Footwork “Running to the side”:

Support on the outisde leg.

Ascending hand acceleration on a semi vertical (close to the ear)

Balanced termination on the outside leg

Footwork “Absortions”:

Support on  the outisde leg. Open stands.

Ascending hand acceleration on a vertical (over the head)

Balanced termination on the outside leg

Footwork “Diagonal forward”:

Close or Open stand

Hand acceleration forward (near the shoulder)

Balanced termination forward in the inside leg.

Footwork “Inside out”:

Close stands (turning shoulder side way)

Hand acceleration forward (near the shoulder)

Balanced termination forward in the inside leg.
