Description:

The coach has to propose a Mental situation (match situation) and then has to observe how the player deals and solves it. The coach gives feedback to the player, after the match is over, on how the player reacted to the situation mentally, and whether the player was able to manage it or not.

Objetive:

The player, through “modified” matches, has to learn and acquire mental abilities and gain enough self control to be able to deal with all possible match situations.

Practical examples

Working on frustration tolerance:

Reduced or team matches (sets, tie breaks … etc) that work on Emotional control: the player who wins the point holds position (up to a maximum of three points in a row), the one who loses the point is exchanged for the partner waiting.

The mission of the cocach is to pay attention  that during the game and especially at the end of each point, no player speaks or makes any derogatory sound or gesture (emotional control). In the event that a player, however little the gesture might be, loses emotional control, he / she is eliminated, and it’s asked to sit on a bench and to not participate again until the next “Game”.

If, before finishing a “Game”, the two players of a team are eliminated for speaking or gesturing, they automatically lose their “Game

Working on dealing with pressure.

Team matches (sets, tie breaks … etc) that work on break points: play out a set starting the points from 30-30 so the player will work on closing the games, there will be a lot of break points opportunities.

It is important to create pressure on the set to be effective. Create differente consequences for the loser. For example loser has to run a mile under 7 minuts, or has to do 100 burpees, loser will have to give the phone to the coach for a day, etc. The idea is to create enought pressure so that players will face break points with a similar tension than in a match. It is key that coaches are helping players during this moments, making sure to breath and prepare between points, having clear ideas on how to play this pressure moments, etc.

When players are under pressure is very important that they control their focuse of attention. Great players are able to focuse their attention on what makes them play their best. Each player has to know how they want to play important points. For example an experimented player might know that focusing on a toss out infront and holding the left arm on the serve makes him /her serve at their best. They might also know that serving out wide and then looking for the next shot to the open space with the forehand is their best option. It is essential that before a important point the player can focuse their attention solely in this aspects.

Practical cases

The practical case that appears in the first video the teacher indicated that the tolerance to frustration and emotional control should be worked on:

It is played in pairs, in this way if a player loses emotional control he is eliminated until the next “Game” and automatically sees the consequence of the act reflected in the “reflection chair”.

Variants

Variants: with this method you can create and work as many mental skills as you want

Pressure, effort, patience, emotional control, …

For example you can creat a competition where losers move down and winner move up . Then you If you win, you will focuse on “euphoria management” and when you lose, you will work on “managing frustration”
