In order to move correctly and quickly on the court, the player has to develop different abilities such as speed, explosiveness and a good reaction; as well as a good overall coordination – all which can essentially be defined as proper footwork.
In modern tennis, footwork is one of the most relevant and important aspects that every player needs in order to be fast and resistant on the court;
It will be also fundamental the player’s court positioning after the shot
Goal:
The main aim of the coach is to work on the specific movement proposed, using a variety of different drills and methods. Repeat the movements until they become automatica for the players.

Studied movement (Side to Side)
Having a good footwork technique moving side to side will allow players to cover the court efficiently. Allowing them to stay consistent from the baseline.
Key Aspects
First step – Crossing inner leg infront, starting shoulder turn
Run – Running avoiding shuffle (slower). There are 2 types of Movement Containment (or Neutral) ,ovement (2 to 3 steps) and Defense movement is (4 to 5 steps)
Adjustment steps – Measuring the distance to the ball (rythm is important)
Last step – Loading stances to generate power from the ground. Open stands when hitting forehands and close or open stands when hitting backhands.
Transfer of the body weight to the ball – Trying to transfer forward with the body.
Balance termination – Landing with the same leg (outside leg) after the contact when hitting open stands. Taking an extra step with the outside leg when hitting close stand backhand.
Recovery – Crossing the outside leg to come back to the middle after the shot is finished
Practical examples
“Shadow trainning”:
When performing shadows player has to be able to do the movement at a high intensity with a proper technique. Follow all key the step mentioned in above.
“Resistance trainning”:
To add a physical component to the trainning use resistance bands. Focuse on the proper technical aspects of the shot as well as intensity.
“Resistance trainning in the sand”:
To add a physical component to the trainning do shadows in the sand. Focuse on the proper technical aspects of the shot as well as intensity.
“Racquet feeding”:

Side to side and backwards movement “Coach volley”:
“Side to side with open or cross support stance”. The coach volleying and the player has to load as follow:
Forehand; open support stance.
Backhand: open or cross support stance.
