Description:

Find your own way to set up the point and approach to the net.

Goal of the activity

Create competitions where the game starts from a consistency rally generating force with the goal of gaining an advantage in the game, and from there, make the following approaches to the net:

  • Mainly down-the-line:
  • Cross court
  • Drop shot:

Organization and development:

Integrate brief competitive activities into trainings (isolating different game situations).

The idea is to recreate different situations that will later happen in the real game and where the players carry out short competitions, competing against each other (defensive, offensive game, building points etc …). Players will learn to compete, competing “learning by doing”.

Coaches can record (or not) the results, in order to establish statistics and subsequent reports of what is happening.

During these competitions we work on mental aspects of tennis, focusing on concentration and emotional control, tolerance to frustration and improvement of body language.

Practical examples

Generating power with the backhand and following attacks approaching the net:

“Playing Up to 7 or 11 Points”:

Start of the Game: One player feeds the ball and both players initiate the point in the following way:

1 – The area of play of the player A is the Backhand side 1/2 court, who can only hit backhands against player “B”, who has the full court area.

2 – The area of play of the player B is the whole court, and the player B has to play only towards the area of player A (Backhand side 1/2 court).

3 – The player A has to attack with the Backhand and try to approach the net to finish the point with easy volleys.

4 – The player B has to play in defense and, in the case the opponent approaches the net, try to neutralize player A with passing shots.

5 – When player “A” approaches the net, free point prevails until finish (player “B” can direct the 1st passing shot wherever he wants).

Scoring: +1 point (2 points total) in case any player executes a Winner shot. The player that has advantage and plays only backhands on 1/2 court gets -1 point per mistake (-2 points total).

Generating power with the forehand and following attacks approaching the net:

Same as above with forehand
